To all the motherless women
Out there,
This weekend very well may suck.
It may suck from start to finish,
Or it may have intermittent suckage,
Or it may just sneak up on you
And hit you like a ton of bricks
When you just can’t
Hold it together anymore.
Whether you’re motherless
Because your mother passed away,
Or because she may as well have;
Whether you’re motherless
By unavoidable circumstance
Or by your own design;
Your pain is valid
And deserves honoring
Just as much as
Any mother might expect.
Maybe you have other
Mother figures
You’re supposed to spend time with.
Maybe you’re a mother yourself.
Maybe you’re expected to
Put on a happy face
And have a nice weekend,
Because this is supposed to be
A nice weekend.
Just because you love your family,
Whatever its makeup may be,
Doesn’t mean this weekend
Isn’t hard.
Just because this weekend is hard,
Doesn’t mean
You don’t love your family.
Try to balance
Taking some time and space
For yourself
In between the times
Where you have to
Put on that happy face.
To all the motherless women
Out there,
I see you, I hear you, I am you.
