If you knew that a horrible, life-altering event were going to occur tomorrow morning…what would you differently tonight?
Would you hug your loved ones tighter? Read your kids one more bedtime story? Let go of the argument with your spouse? Send that text message you’ve been meaning to send your friend, to tell them you miss them, that you haven’t sent because you’re both busy and don’t want to bother them? Give your dog an extra belly rub instead of shooing them down?
If you knew tomorrow was 9/11, what would you do on 9/10?
Here’s the thing. We didn’t know it then. We didn’t fathom that such horrific tragedies could occur and force us into such drastic reckoning. But we know it now. We know what can happen. We know what does happen. And we know that there is often nothing we can do about the grand scheme of things. But, we can do something about our little scheme of things. We can do what we can to spread kindness and advocate for love and peace and respect and civility, just as a bare minimum. It may not seem like much, but it’s a pretty good start I think. My mother used to lecture me that I can’t change the world; I think she had it backwards. Changing the world starts with me. It starts with us. One step at a time.
So again I ask you — in a world where we’re almost getting used to having significant disasters multiple times a day now (with today being no exception) — if you knew tomorrow was 9/11, what would you do on 9/10?
